Back to BlogIs an apprenticeship for me?

Albert Einstein said ‘Education is what remains after one has forgotten everything he learned in school’. Just a few years ago, it seemed like I had to chart out my whole life over ten minutes with a career advisor. Maybe some of you had an insightful and helpful careers advisor at school; one who knew your personality, ambitions and achievements. For others, you were sat in front of PlanitPlus career zone and that determined the course of your life. Well, not quite but you understand my point. Each of us have different influences on our lives, shaping and guiding us to make good decisions.

After six years at secondary school, etched in my mind was the concept that if university was not on the horizon then success would only ever be fanciful. Success is subjective anyway, but maybe that’s for another blog.

You may have seen the #nowrongpath campaign recently; different individuals charting their routes to where they are now. For some university is the best option yet for others it seems like debt, headaches and a waste of time.

If you feel university isn’t for you, why not consider an apprenticeship? Like every course of action, there’s pros and cons and hopefully looking at them will help you make a decision.

The Pros

You get first-hand experience

When you begin an apprenticeship, you are placed in an environment where you are surrounded with knowledge and experience; it is amazing what you could pick up just watching and listening. You are given training by those who are involved in the role daily, up to date with the industry and face the challenges of doing the role.

You can earn while you learn

A cliché of the apprenticeship world, but true nonetheless. Admittedly, the wage is lower and there could be days you wonder what you’re doing but you have an opportunity to gain experience, a qualification without accruing debt.

You develop personally

As well as the ‘hands on’ experience, you are placed in a new environment and often around people older and experienced. Quickly, your skillset is broadened and you could find yourself a confident communicator, team player and hard worker without really having realised it.

The Cons

It closes some doors

There are many roles that require applicants to have a degree so doing an apprenticeship may limit you if you are seeking a position where university education is essential. Doing an apprenticeship will give you a great deal of experience but usually in the one sector.

You won’t have a student experience

The thought of a mid-week lie in or night out can be appealing but that’s going to be much less likely in the world of work. A highlight of student life is the long summer holidays that aren’t available through an apprenticeship so you may feel like you’re missing out.

You are suddenly responsible

Some will see this as a con and others will just see it was the way life is. The workplace has a different set of pressures and accountabilities that will be all new if you are straight from school. It is more than just being on time, and working hard. There may be deadlines, targets or production levels that are expected of you and your team, meaning there could be pressure associated with ensuring these are met.

As in every aspect of life, we are faced with decisions in terms of careers and the path we will take. Sometimes we will be sure we made the correct call; other times we will wonder if it was the best decision. Hopefully these thoughts will help in deciding whether or not an apprenticeship is for you.
