Back to BlogA Day in the life of a Graduate Recruiter: Ben Wardrop

Just graduated and wondering what’s next?

Meet Ben Wardrop, a Graduate Recruiter at First People Solutions, specialising in Construction & Civil Engineering. In this article, we’ll give you a behind-the-scenes look at Ben’s role and what it’s like to begin your career in recruitment through our graduate programme at FPS.

Morning Routine: Starting the Day

Most of my mornings I start with a morning gym session. Afterward, I get on the train and head into work. The commute gives me time to get a head start by checking emails and messages. Once I’m in the office, I eat breakfast which is always morning oats and fruit with a coffee. During this I review my diary noting down the day’s priorities.

Engagement and Outreach: Connecting with Candidates

I actively use a mix of platforms such as LinkedIn, CV Library, Indeed, Vertione, and social media – to find and connect with talented individuals. Building rapport and meaningful connections is at the heart of what I do and using multiple channels helps me reach candidates where I can engage with them effectively.

Candidate Screening + Relationship Management

A big part of my role involves understanding not just what makes a strong candidate on paper, but what makes them a great fit for a particular team or culture. It’s about asking the right questions, listening closely and building genuine, long-term relationships – whether someone is actively looking or just open to the right opportunity.

Any advice for those looking to join a business as a graduate recruiter?

Do your homework before joining a recruitment agency – every business has its own structure, KPIs and culture. Understanding these differences can help you hit the ground running. Also, take time to really learn the market you’ll be recruiting in. When you’re passionate and knowledgeable about your niche, it’s easier to stay motivated, credible and successful.

Fun fact: Outside of work

Outside the office, I’m all about staying active and spending quality time with friends and family. I’m a big fan of football and golf and I’ve recently picked up pickleball – it is surprisingly fun and very competitive.
