Debunking 5 Recruitment Myths

On a monthly basis, I hear several myths about the recruitment process and recruitment consultancies in general. Therefore, I am going to debunk a few of these myths and hopefully provide a clearer idea of how we work.

“Recruitment agencies take money out of the working man’s pocket!”

At First People Solutions, our goal is to service both the candidate and the company we’re recruiting for simultaneously. The charge goes directly to the end-client for the service that is provided (resourcing, advertising, logistics) at a % of the candidates offered rate or salary. Our goal is to get our candidates the rate/salary that they deserve, all while providing the end-client with a new employee that will drive the business forward.

“Recruitment agencies use false advertising as a way to collect CV’s”

Recruitment consultancies make money by placing candidates into jobs. It wouldn’t make much sense for us to go through the time-consuming process of collecting CV’s and putting them onto a database full of other dormant CV’s, and then do nothing with them. We only ever post job adverts if there is a job available. Even if you aren’t the best fit for a specific role, we will always keep you up to date with anything else that comes in, if it fits your skillset.

“You should only send your CV to the large, well known recruitment agencies”

Candidates should do their research – large, multinational agencies aren’t always the best. Look at advertisements, look at company websites, talk to colleagues and work with a few agencies that have a specialism in your market. For example, if you work in the gas turbine sector, First People Solutions are the best company to work with. We have a great understanding of the market, upcoming projects, which companies to work for and a number of vacancies at any specific time.

“Recruiters know nothing about the markets that they recruit into”

At First People Solutions, all of our employees have an understanding of the markets they recruit into. This is a necessity – we need to know what we’re looking for! Some employees have degrees in their specific market, some have previous industry experience, and some are trained up from day 1 until they have the necessary understanding of the market they’re recruiting into. Personally, I’ve always had an interest in the Oil and Nuclear industries; my father is an electrical engineer and I’ve learned a lot from him about the industry that I work in.

“There’s no need for recruitment agencies”

Companies, both large and small, have historically struggled to find and recruit the best talent on the market. It’s an expensive and time-consuming process for companies to do themselves; it involves headhunting, advertising, referrals, and annual subscriptions to job boards – all of this before you’ve even found a candidate who is interested!

That’s why there is a need for recruitment agencies. It’s our job to take the stress away from the hiring company, provide advice and ultimately – to pair a talented candidate with an exciting job.
