A Day in the life of a Recruiter at FPS

Meet Ryan McNeil, a Senior Recruitment Consultant specialising in Aviation Recruitment. This article will dive into Ryan’s daily routine and provide insights into his role as a Senior Recruitment Professional at FPS.

Morning Routine: Starting the Day

I like to get up around 6/6:30am and have breakfast. I’ll (very) occasionally go for a short run before work. I then like to check my emails on my work phone on the train into work to make sure I am fully prepared for the day ahead.

Engagement and Outreach: Connecting with Candidates

I enjoy speaking with potential candidates on the phone and building relationships with them through conversations. This allows me to build a network of contacts and then through word of mouth this network continuously grows. I also connect with potential candidates/client through various other methods including LinkedIn, social media, emails & more.

Candidate Screening + Relationship Management

Initially when identifying a potential candidate, I will look over their CV and their various documents which are required for the specific job role. I’ll then speak with them over the phone or on Microsoft Teams and decipher if their values match that of the clients. This ensures I am sending the best candidates to our clients which helps maintain a strong relationship with them. I also make sure to speak with our clients over the phone/Microsoft Teams as often as possible to see if I can assist with anything and make sure me and my team are offering the best service possible.

Closing the Day: Wrapping Up and Planning Ahead

To close off the day, I will check over my ‘To Do’ list and make sure I have completed everything I set out to that day. If I have any outstanding tasks these will be noted down and added to the following days to do list, making sure I am fully prepared for the following working day. I usually end up washing a few of my teams’ dirty dishes at the end of the day as well!

Any advice for those looking to build a career as a recruiter?

For anyone looking to build a career as a recruiter I would focus on building strong relationships with your clients/candidates first and foremost. Ensure you fully understand whatever industry you are working in and then get making some connections, and don’t be scared of rejection as there will be a lot of it! Whilst some people may think you need to be selfish to be a successful recruiter, I would recommend being a team player and helping out your team where and when possible. This will help the team/business as a whole and ultimately benefit you in the long term.

Fun fact: Outside of work

After work during the week, I tend to spend my spare time going to the gym and currently training for a half marathon. At the weekends I like spending time with family and friends, taking my dog out for walks & going out for food/drinks
