Back to BlogA Day in the life of a Apprentice Recruiter: Blair McLatchie

Feeling uncertain about your next move or future career?

Meet Blair McLatchie , an Apprentice Recruiter at First People Solutions, specialising in Construction recruitment. In this article, we’ll give you a behind-the-scenes look at Blair’s role and what it’s like to begin your career in recruitment through our apprenticeship programme at FPS.

Morning Routine: Starting the Day

I kick off the day by checking emails and reviewing any updates from hiring managers or candidates, no two mornings are ever the same. From there, I go through my emails and recruitment pipeline to see where everyone is in the process and prioritise any urgent roles or clients. Coffee usually helps too.

Engagement and Outreach: Connecting with Candidates

A big part of my role involves identifying and engaging with talent across the industry – from labourers to experienced machine operators. I actively source candidates through platforms like LinkedIn, CV Library and my own database of logged candidates, as well as speaking with those who apply directly. Tailoring outreach messages and highlighting the value of joining our client’s teams is a key part of the process.

Candidate Screening + Relationship Management

Throughout the day, I screen CVs, hold phone interviews and build relationships with candidates not just for today’s roles, but for future opportunities. Recruitment in construction often moves fast, so keeping in regular contact and understanding each candidate’s strengths and goals helps ensure the right fit, both technically and culturally for the client and candidate.

Closing the Day: Wrapping Up and Planning Ahead

Before I log off, I follow up on open tasks, send feedback to candidates and sync with hiring teams on next steps. I also take time to reflect on what’s working in our approach and where we can improve. Recruitment is all about people, so consistency and communication matter.

Any advice for those looking to join a business as an Apprentice?

  • Be curious: Ask questions, show eagerness to learn and take advantage of any opportunity to grow.
  • Be reliable: In construction, showing up on time and being consistent goes a long way.
  • Don’t worry about having all the answers apprenticeships are about gaining skills on the job.
  • Bring a good attitude: A positive mindset and willingness to get involved are just as valuable as experience.

Fun fact: Outside of work

I spend my time outside work going to the gym and training MMA throughout the week which is a lot more fun than some might think. I also enjoy spending time with my friends going on nights out and having a laugh with everyone.
